What Is 5S Housekeeping?
5S housekeeping is the use of the five steps of 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain) to keep a workplace organised, clean and safe every day. Ordinary housekeeping cleans the area. 5S housekeeping also decides what belongs in the area, where each item goes, what “clean” means, and how the area is checked every week.

Why Cleaning Drives Fail
Most plants have run a cleaning drive before a customer visit or an audit. The plant looks good for a week, then slowly goes back to how it was. It happens for four reasons:
- Nothing was removed. The clutter was cleaned and stacked neatly, not taken away. It comes back into use, and the area fills up again.
- Nothing got a place. Without a marked place for each item, people put things wherever is convenient.
- The source of dirt was never fixed. The same oil leak or open conveyor makes the area dirty again by Monday.
- No one checks. Without a weekly audit and an owner, no one notices the slide until the next visitor is due.
5S fixes all four. That is why plants that switch from cleaning drives to 5S stop needing cleaning drives.
5S Rules for Housekeeping
These are the 5S housekeeping rules we put in place in client plants:
- If an item is not needed for today’s work, it does not stay in the area.
- Every item has one marked place, and it goes back there after use.
- Aisles, exits and emergency equipment are never blocked.
- Each person cleans their own machine and workstation, and inspects it while cleaning.
- Every spill is cleaned at once, and its source is reported.
- The area standard photo shows the correct condition, and the area matches it.
- Five minutes of 5S at the start and end of every shift.
- The area owner scores the area every week, and the score is displayed.

In Hindi, 5S housekeeping is often explained as छँटाई, व्यवस्था, सफाई, मानकीकरण और अनुशासन (sorting, arranging, cleaning, standardising and discipline). In Gujarati: છટણી, ગોઠવણી, સફાઈ, માનકીકરણ અને શિસ્ત. Whatever the language, the point is the same: cleaning (सफाई / સફાઈ) is only one of the five.

People resist 5S when they think it is extra cleaning work. Here are the ten objections we hear most, and the answers that work on the shop floor:
- “We are here to produce, not to clean.” 5S cuts the time spent searching for tools and material, which gives production time back.
- “We already did 5S last year.” That was a cleaning drive. 5S without weekly audits always slips.
- “Housekeeping staff should do it.” Only the people who use the area know what is needed and where it should go.
- “We might need that item someday.” Red tag it. If nobody asks for it in the holding period, it isn’t needed.
- “There is no time.” Start with five minutes per shift and one pilot area.
- “Management will lose interest.” Ask the plant head to walk one area a week. It shows the team it matters.
- “It’s just for show before audits.” Audit on random days, so the area must be ready every day.
- “Our plant is too old or too small.” 5S works in any plant. Older plants usually gain the most space.
- “Contract workers keep changing.” Make the standard visual, so a new worker can follow it on day one.
- “It won’t make any difference.” Measure search time, space and accidents before and after. At Heranba, 5S recovered ₹43 lakh of idle material.
